This section explain how to adjust the repositories list.

Ubuntu desktop

Edit the sources.list

sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list

Disable source repositories

You don't need to use the sources for a daily use. Just remove or comment all deb-src lines using a #

#deb-src http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy-updates main restricted

Required repositories

You need to enable:

  • Ubuntu official repositories
  • Backport - community repositories
  • Ubuntu partners - commercial packages
  • 3rd parties - from non-related providers

Your file should look like that:

##
## Ubuntu repositories
## Distros:
##    ubuntu 13.10     => saucy
##    ubuntu 14.04 LTS => trusty
##
##

## Ubuntu official repos
deb http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-security main restricted universe multiverse

## Backports. Community repos approved by Canonical
deb http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse

## Canonical (Ubuntu) partners
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu trusty partner

## 3rd parties libraries
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main

!! Don't forget to replace 'trusty' by the distribution name !!

Take changes into account

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Debian

The principle is the same as Ubuntu (logical as Ubuntu comes from Debian!). Just put the following content into sources.list:
